1.25-Gbps Ethernet—Perfect for multiple applications involving Gigabit Ethernet within enterprise and service provider network infrastructures, these two SNMP manageable modules convert Gigabit twistedpair signals to 1000BASE-SX or 1000BASE-LX fibre optics.
High Availability.
Because fibre connections usually interconnect different locations or networks and carry a lot of information, they’re usually the most critical connections within the entire network environment. This makes the Media Converter System II the network administrator’s number one choice. This modular system includes media converter cards you can plug into a chassis that serves as a central hub for your converters. And, because the cards are hot-swappable, they can be plugged in or removed during operation.
Ultimate connectivity.
The High-Density Media Converter System II is a very flexible solution, which works in a variety of applications. The system can carry modules for converting Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, T1/E1, ATM OC-3, ATM OC-12, Fibre Channel and protocol-independent fibre-to-fibre. The modules listed on the facing page are just a sample of what we offer (for a full list, call Tech Support). Switched media converter modules and WDM single-strand fibre modules offer the latest developments in this range.
Switched media conversion and WDM advantages.
The switched media converter modules convert not only the media but also the speed and duplex mode. So you can now connect end devices with different speeds and duplex modes. This conversion is based on Layer 2 technology in which frames are actively processing using a store-and-forward technique. To optimise the fibre link throughput, the switched modules filter addresses, too.
The WDM module doubles your existing fibre capacity — or, if used in a new installation, it can cut your costs in half—by using only a single strand of fibre (ssf) within a duplex cable. It’s able to do this by compressing two wavelengths (1310 nm and 1550 nm) on the same strand. Distances up to 40 kilometres can be achieved.
Management and monitoring.
The Media Converter System II incorporates a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) agent that‘s embedded directly on the chassis backplane. Each chassis also includes environmental sensors to monitor its temperature and voltage level. The SNMP software, iView, is included with the chassis.
Link integrity and autocrossover.
LinkLoss™ and FiberAlert™ are two module features that make it easy to monitor and troubleshoot your fibre links.
LinkLoss is used to make a conversion look like a physical connection. This means that if you disconnect or lose the link on the fibre side of a module with LinkLoss enabled, the module will also drop the link on its copper side. This works for both fibre (FX LinkLoss) and copper (TX LinkLoss) sides.
FiberAlert constantly monitors the fibre link between two modules. As soon as a module loses its fibre link (no receive signal), it drops its transmit path so the remote side is informed of the problem on the fibre link.
With the LinkLoss and FiberAlert mechanisms, the network management system can keep you informed of the modules’ connection status and the exact location of link problems, minimising downtime and making troubleshooting your fibre networks easier. You can check a link by observing the status of an LED. These features can save you both time and money.
